IT IS A CANNONEER DYNASTY
Whether it is Class C or Class B does not seem to matter much for Watervliet.  The Cannoneers have now won four straight Section II titles between the two small school classes and have moved on to the State Tournament once again after defeating Colonial Council rival Mechanicville 38-27.  Ailayia Demand (above)  scored a game high 16 points to lead the garnet and gray. (T. Smith photo)
MAPLE HILL MOVES ON
Junior Katie Roth (40) did her best work in the seasons last game against a Section II team by dropping 26 points and pulling down 21 rebounds to lead the Wildcats over Greenwich 56-50 to move on to the Class C State Tournament. (T. Smith photo)

A BRAVE NEW WORLD

Fonda's Brandon Mercado (10) stays cool while being tightly defended by Watervliet's Jordan Gleason (12) and Kevin Pontore. (Jon S. photo)
Watervliet has one of the most storied basketball franchises in Section II and New York State, and as the future still looks bright for a young Cannoneer team, the Class B Championship belongs to an undefeated Fonda team who defeated the Arsenal City school 62-54.  The Braves were led by Senior Seth Hidde who netted 22 points in the title game and earned tournament MVP.
NIEBLING SPARKS CLIPPERS RUN

Larry Niebling (above) rattled off six straight points and two steals sparking Germantown to pull away from Argyle.(J. Smith)
Germantown took a three point lead into halftime and slowly pulled away in the second half to defeat Argyle 70-61 and win their first boys Section II Championship in over 30 years.  The Clipper's Cody Broast was awarded the Tournament MVP.
BURNT HILLS-BALLSTON LAKE
JUST KNOWS HOW TO WIN

Tournament MVP Zach Morton (32) goes in for the shot while defended by Lansingburgh's Tyler Hammett. (Jon S. photo)
They entered the Class A playoffs four games below .500 and all they did from there is record three victories and win the Class A title.  Burnt Hills just knows how to win those big games when they matter most.  They have more Section II championships over the past two years than any other school, yet this one proves that experience in the big games is an intangable that can not be overlooked.  Tournament MVP Zach Morton lead the Spartans over Lansingburgh 55-49 in overtime by netting 29 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.
PANTHERS CAN'T REJECT WILDCATS

Kevin McMahon of Hudson Falls blocks the shot of Maple Hill's Jake Jasiewicz (42) during the first quarter of the Class C title game. (J. Smith photo)
Hoosick Falls rushed out to a commanding 16-3 first quarter lead and took a 26-16 lead into the half, but it was not enough to defeat Maple Hill.  The Wildcats battled back in the second half and sent the game into overtime where Chris Despart  played the part of hero and hit his third 3-pointer of the game with :04 seconds remaining to give the defending Class C Champions the crown once again and earned himself the Tournament MVP in the process.  Sean Danaher added 10 points and 10 rebounds in the 46-45 overtime win for Maple Hill. Kevin McMahon netted a game high 18 points for the Panthers.

THIRD TIME IS A CHARM FOR SCOTTS
Jacquelyn Miller (10) scored a game high 18 points to lead Argyle past previously unbeaten Whitehall 51-42 to capture the Class D title.  In two previous meetings this season the Railroaders had defeated the Scotts, but when it mattered most Argyle pulled off the upset.

GREENWICH IS CLASS C CHAMPIONS
The Greenwich girls basketball team came out fast and never let up defeating Berne Knox 65-27 giving the Witches the Class C title.  Greenwich will now face Class CC champion Maple Hill in the CC-C championship to determine who will go on to the NYSPHSAA tournament. (J. Smith photo)

KNIGHTS STAND TALL IN SEMI'S
Tyler Hammett (50) of Lansingburgh uses his 7-foot frame to tip in the rebound for 2 points.(T. Smith photo)
Lansingburgh raced out to a 17-1 first quarter lead and although Ichabod Crane did their best to get back into the game, their best efforts fell short as the number one seed defeated the Rider's 56-38.  The Knights will face Burnt Hills on Sunday at 6:15pm.
BH-BL IN ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP
Jake Baxter of Burnt Hills goes up for a shot during the Class A semi-finals on Tuesday night (T. Smith photo).
Usually it is expected but this time Burnt Hills (9-11) has shocked everyone by making it into the Class A boys basketball championship.  The Spartans earned there place in the finals by defeating Gloversville 50-38 on Thursday at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

A COLONIAL DAY FOR CLASS B
My'Asia Alston's (above) buzzer beater did not fall and Haely Richter's made free throw at the back end of her two foul shots with 6 seconds remaining proved to be the game winner as Ravena scored another upset and defeated Cohoes 53-52 in the Class B quarterfinals on Wednesday at Watervliet High. (J. Smith photo)

Ailayia Demand (above) and Watervliet easily advanced to the Class B semi-finals.  The Cannoneers defeated Schuylerville 46-30 and became one of three Colonial Council Schools to advance to the semi's.  The ladies from the Arsenal city will play Ravena while Mechanicville rounds out the colonial council squads and will face Hudson Falls. (T. Smith photo)

Max Weaver (10) floats one in for two (T. Smith)
CBA had a 32-23 lead at the half, then they exploded in the third quarter for 21 points while holding Albany to only nine.  When the game ended, the Brothers had defeated the Falcons 64-43 and set up a showdown with Shenendehowa on March 9 at the TU center.
MAPLE HILL, HOOSIC VALLEY SET FOR CLASS CC CHAMPIONSHIP

Katie Roth (above) scored a game high 13 points and Maple Hill raced out to a 18-6 first quarter lead and held on to defeat Schenectady Christian 44-29 and advance to the Class CC finals on Friday night.  The Wildcats will face Hoosic Valley in the Championship. (J. Smith photo)

On Wednesday February 24, Cohoes and Greenville were set to meet in the first round of the Class B playoffs.  On Tuesday March 1, the teams finally squared off and after bursting out to a 32-6 half time lead the Tigers went on to win the game 63-19 and move on to face Ravena in the quarterfinals Wednesday at Watervliet.

FONDA BRAVES IT OUT
Fonda's Brandon Mercado puts up a shot during the Class B quarterfinals against Cobleskill on Sunday night (J. Smith).
After surviving an initial scare from Cobleskill, Fonda settled down and battle out of the quarterfinals of the Class B playoffs.  The Braves will Face Johnstown on Tuesday in the semi-finals.
GLEASON, 'VLIET SLAM BROADALBIN
At half time it looked as though Broadalbin still had a chance if things went their way.  Then a 14-year old Freshman shattered the Patriots dreams of an upset.
Jordan Gleason (above) slammed home two dunks, hit a pair of three pointers, had three steals and two assists and that was all in a five minute span of the third quarter.  When the quarter ended the only question remaining was when will the substitutes enter the game for the Cannoneers.
Watervliet Head Coach Walter Bowden decided that would take place early in the fourth quarter but 2:27 later Gleason and his older brother Devonte re-entered the game after Broadalbin cut the lead to 19.  The number two seeded Class B team held on for the 89-72 victory and will play Schenectady Christian on Tuesday at the Glens Falls Civic Center. DRABIK LEAD STATE QUALIFIERS
Colonie's John Drabik (center lane 3) ran a 6.3 in the finals of the 55 meter dash to advance to the State Championship meet next weekend at Cornell.  Albany's Kareem Morris (Lane 4 in blue) finished second and Tom Lucey (Lane 2 purple) of CBA finished third to also advanced to the State meet.
TU CENTER, LANZI, "GWIZ" DELIVER
The atmosphere was unmatched and at its highest when Giuseppi Lanzi (above) and Nick "Gwiz" Gwiazdowski controlled their State Finals matches and took home the State Championship crowns.  Amsterdam's Lanzi was the first Section II winner of the weekend winning with a 13-6 decision over Kyle Wade (XI) for the Division I State Title at 152lbs.  Gwiazdowski of Duaneburg followed soon after earning the decision victory 7-2 over Jon Casper of Leroy (V) for the Division II 215lb Gold.  If the energy and atmosphere are any indication, the Wrestling State Championship will remain at the TU Center. 'VLIET SURVIVES A SCARE

Watervliet's Emily Roden (10) defends Jessica Bellai of Schalmont during there first round game. (T. Smith)
After much delay Schalmont traveled to Watervliet for what everyone thought would be an easy win for the Cannoneers, but for the first two quarters of their third matchup of the season it looked as if the Sabres may upset the Class B #1 seed.  The second half however belonged to the Arsenal City hoopsters who move on to host Schuylerville on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Sectional Tournament  with a 45-33 win.

BURGH ROLLS INTO NEXT ROUND

Lansingburgh's Ariana Youngs (white)battle with Bishop Gibbons Tayla Williams (maroon). (T. Smith photo)
From start to finish the Lansinburgh version of the Knights were the much more capable and dominant team and went on to defeat the Bishop Gibbons Knights 57-29 during their Class A first round match-up on Thursday night.
SARATOGA IS SECTION II CHAMPS
Shaker/Colonie came out strong and dominated the first period of play, but a regulation hockey game is three periods long.  After entering the first intermission leading 1-0 the Jets had complete control of the game.  When the teams returned to the ice for the second period it looked as if it may be much of the same in the second period.  Then everything changed.  The initial dominant team took a few penalties and the momentum began to shift.  Saratoga netted two goals in the second and continued to control the game from there and took the Division I crown with a 3-1 victory. GAME ON: CADETS BATTLE IT OUT

The snow storm and school closings changed what was to be a busy night on the hardwood once again.  For those of you who did not make it to Albany to watch Boys Academy take on La Salle, and there were not many who missed it judging by the capacity crowd, you missed what shaped up to be the game of year thus far.  Josh Terry scored a team high 16 points and teammate Marquis Campbell (22) netted 12 but it was not enough to lead La Salle's version of the Cadets to a victory.  Albany Academy outscored the private school from Troy 20-14 in the fourth quarter and won the first round contest 62-59 led by David Benoks game high 18 points.  Nolan Hart added 15 points for the host Cadets. THE MOMENT WE WERE WAITING FOR

After a long winter season of sports and very little snow, the snow fell canceling most games but some played on including Devonte Gleason (above shooting) and the Watervliet Cannoneers.  Stillwater plowed through the snow to travel to the Arsenal City but the Cannoneers won the first round of the Class B playoffs 68-52.(J. DRABIK HIGHLIGHTS SECTIONALS
John Drabik (above) took a while this season to run the 55 meter dash because he had a terrible case of shin splints, but when he did finally run the race he surely did it in style.  The Senior won the Division I Sectionals in a Section II record time of 6.1(HandHeld).
BOYS TEAM & INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
UP, UP AND OVER FOR PALMER
When it comes to getting up as high as possible to get over a bar, Sarah Palmer (above) of Schuylerville does it better than anyone else in the section.  The Junior displayed her abilities first on Thursday by winning the Division IV pole vault by clearing a height of 9'.  She then continued her rise by high jumping 5'6" on Sunday at SUNY Albany. The Section II State Qualifiers are Saturday at SUNY.

(T Smith photo)
CRUSADERS PLAY THERE WAY IN

Catholic Central's Kevin Wilkes (0) rises up to grab the rebound over Eumel Morrow (23) of Amsterdam. (J. Smith photo)
After the first quarter of play it looked as if Amsterdam may have had the game-plan to move into the Class AA sectionals, but Catholic Central led by Sam Clement (22) outscored the Rams 60 to 40 over the next three quarters.  Clement dropped a game high 18 points and the Crusaders won the game 72-58.
Wednesday February 17, 2010
JETS, PLAINSMEN DOMINATE
Shaker/Colonie and Shenendehowa were the favorites entering their Capital District High School Hockey League Division I first round playoff games.  When the final horn sounded, they had proven why.
The Jets used a dominating game on both sides of the ice to defeat CBA 4-0 and move on to the second round.
The Plainsmen may have allowed a few goals in their contest against Niskayuna/Schenectady but it did not matter as they went on to win the game 9-3.
The wins set up a semi-final showdown between Shenendehowa and Shaker Colonie which will be played  7:30 pm Friday 2/19 at the Clifton Park Arena.

FONDA, BERNE-KNOX WAC CHAMPS

WAC GIRLS
Liz Harvey scored eight of her team high 15 points in the fourth quarter and that proved to be the difference as Berne Knox outscored Fonda 20-12 in the final frame and defeated the Braves 54-49 to capture the WAC Tournament Championship for the first time since 2004.  Paula Egelston netted a games high 23 points in the losing effort.

A THIRD QUARTER CRUSADE
With the score tied at 21 going into the half, the Catholic Central girls basketball team knew that they would need to come out strong to start the half.
They did just that.

Maria Foglia (above) scored a team high 14 points and Mikayla Deguire added 12 for the host team.

DAY ONE OF STATE QUALIFIERS
Chris Onsman of Ballston Spa advanced to the semi finals at the first day of the Section II State Qualifiers on Friday.  The Semi-finals and finals take place Saturday.
A BLUE COLLAR CHAMPION
Entering the game the Watervliet Cannoneers and the Voorheesville Blackbirds were playing for a share of the Colonial Council title.  When the hard fought battle between the league rivals was over, the host team from the Arsenal City were once again Council champions and will likely raise another banner, the 23rd, at Harry Tucker Gymnasium.  After three quarters of play the game was tied at 46, but the Cannoneers outscored the Blackbirds 20-13 in the fourth quarter, led by Senior Nick Durocher, who scored eight of his game high 23 points in the final stanza. Watervliet finished the season 12-2 and tied for the Council crown with Lansingburgh. (T. Smith photo)

ELEGANCE RULES SECTION II
On Thursday night the feature event in Section II were the gymnastics Championships held at Shaker High School. The host school and four others went through five rotations in four events to determine the individual and team Champions.  Bethlehem, Guilderland Saratoga, Shenendehowa and Shaker each took turns competing in the vault, balance beam, uneven bars and floor exercise in what was a show of grace and elegance.  NYCS.net was there to witness what has become one of the areas most impressive athletic events.

GREAT DANE CLASSIC

Superbowl Sunday was not a day of rest for all of Section II.  As a matter of fact, it was a busy day at the SEFCU Arena on the Campus at the University at Albany where the 2nd Annual Great Dane Classic was held for indoor track athletes.  The event is the feature Invitational track meet for Section II indoor track competitors and features the areas top runners.  The Classic not only serves as a showcase of talent for athletes but also gives a preview for the State Qualifier meet which takes place at the end of the month. AN ATHLETE FOR ALL SEASONS
Schalmont's Vince Gallo (on top) powered his way to winning the Section II Class CC title at the 181lb weight Class.  The Sectional Championship is Gallo's second in two seasons this school year after being a member of the Class B football champions (T. Smith)
MERGER WORKS FOR WALSH/VLIET
The Watervliet Wrestling team always seemed to have tough kids.  They always had some wrestlers that opponents would fear, but in recent years that fear has spread.  For the past two years Section II has taken notice that the Cannoneers are at the top of the heap in Class CC.  What has been the biggest change in the past two years?  A merger between Loudonville Christian and Watervliet's programs.  What that has meant for Watervliet is Brian Walsh (above on top).  Walsh is now the two-time Section II champion after winning the 140lb crown on Saturday at Schalmont High School.  Was it enough for his team to take the Title for the second year in a row?(T.
