RARE FEAT FOR A PAIR OF CLIPPERS |
|
 |
|
Major League
Baseball celebrated the season of
the pitcher with an unheard of
amount of “no hitters” and “perfect
games” this past summer.
This winter, Section II basketball
is celebrating the season of the
1,000 point scorer. It is a rare
accomplishment that not only shows
how prolific a scorer is but also
how long they have been able to
score at such a high level.
Several individuals have
accomplished that goal in the
2010-11 season.
Dani DeGregory of Greenwich
made history at the start of the
season and Maple Hill senior center
Katie Roth joined her in early
December.
While these two phenomenal
female ball players were reaching
their milestone, two other
student-athletes on the male side
were also making their mark, but
this feat is a bit more uncommon.
On December 3, Cody Broast scored
his 1,000th point marking
four years of leading his team, and
26 days later Thomas Griffin scored
a bucket that put him over the 1,000
point mark adding his name to the
list.
So why was this so much more
rare?
Both of these sure shooters are
member of the Germantown boy’s
basketball team.
Two players on the same team have
both reached a milestone of such
high esteem.
It is not often heard of and
requires not only success but also a
great deal of unselfish play.
“We really work well together as a
team,” Proclaims Broast.
“Everyone knows what their
role is and we all play it as best
as we can.”

The unselfish play is an important
criterion for a team to become a
League, Sectional and Regional
Champion as Germantown did last
season.
The most important thing for the
Clippers is to utilize all of their
players not just the two superstar
scorers.
“We are proud of each other for what
we have accomplished individually,”
admits Griffin. “But our team is
made up of many weapons and that is
why it is possible.”
One of those other weapons is fellow
senior Larry Niebling who plays the
point guard position for Germantown.
He is the only Clipper to
total over 100 points thus far in
the season.
It is not only the scoring of points
that make the duo of Griffin and
Broast so tough to defend, it is
also the fact that they make timely
shots.
Germantown head coach Jack Thomas
enjoys being able to have two cool
characters leading his defending
champions.
“It makes life easy knowing that you
have two guys like this that can
score any time it is needed,” says
Thomas. “It’s the fact that they
make the clutch shots when we need
them that makes them so important to
the team.”
Their importance to the team showed
throughout their magical run through
the Section and State tournaments
last year and if the Clippers have
any chance of repeating as Section
II champions again it will take that
team effort and clutch shooting.
Class D teams across the
state now know about Germantown, and
the Clippers hope to show them even
more the rest of the way. (NYCS) |
